Full disclosure – I’m an out-and-out Brené fan-girl! Watching ‘The Power of Vulnerability’ is when I just fell for her ‘down-to-earth approach’. I think it’s still the most-watched TED talk and yet I regularly find folks who haven’t come across Brené. My happiest day was when my 16-year-old daughter fell in love with Brené too and has found her work extremely helpful through the toughest of times. Love it!
I really loved this talk,! Even as a very positive person who can be knocking on the door of upbeat Mary Poppins, there are times I want to give ‘positive’ a right good slap in the face. I love the way Susan looks at this, and it’s a very thought-provoking talk delivered with both heart and humour.
Finding My Voice
My TEDx Talk came amid my most significant life change and challenge to-date. However, this all stayed behind the scenes out of respect for those involved and to protect their privacy. Still, I chose to continue with the plan to deliver at TEDx Glasgow as it was a vital way for me to find my own voice and have some control. In fact, it became a very therapeutic process for me, thanks to the support of two incredible coaches – Clare English and Pauline Houston. For me, it was an extreme exercise in vulnerability, which has proved to be so very empowering for me along the way – nothing but gratitude for the opportunity.
Talk Overview
When it comes to change – getting started and taking those first steps can be the hardest thing to do. In my experience, I found sustaining change was, in fact, much harder than starting. Thirteen years of fresh starts built a pretty strong starting muscle. What I really needed was a sustaining muscle! Only when I had a total rethink of my beliefs on change, success and failure did I have a breakthrough moment.
In my talk, I will take you through my journey of fear, discomfort, joy, setbacks and occasional minor victories. Instead of continually starting – I had found a “get back up and keep going” approach had completely changed not only my health and well-being but also how I tackle life challenges with a new-found sense of resilience.
I definitely felt like a bit of a plonker when I first practised the power pose that Amy Cuddy talks about in her TED talk, but by jinkers, it works!!! This is definitely worth a shot – I even do this ahead of a difficult one-to-one conversation, so it’s not just about getting ready for a big talk. It’s a really interesting way to rethink how your body can connect into what you’re thinking.
As I set out to learn more about Aspergers and the idea of neurodiversity, I found this talk massively helpful. Temple Grandin has done so much to help those with ASD – particularly females – more, I imagine than she ever thought she could. Some wonderful insights for everyone, not just for those who are directly connected to ASD in day-to-day life.
